Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, is an independent agency answerable to the Minister for Children, Disability and Equality. It took on functions previously divided among the Health Service Executive's children and family services, the Family Support Agency and the National Educational Welfare Board. The name is intended to suggest the Irish words for a beginning and a day.
The Child and Family Agency Act 2013 established the agency and dissolved the Family Support Agency and the National Educational Welfare Board, transferring functions to the new agency. S.I. No. 503/2013 appointed 1 January 2014 as the establishment day.
